Grasslands and the quality of water : measurements on plots, rotations, and observatories of practices
Agricultural practices contribute to changes in the use of the very lands from which all water resources originate. Following twenty years of trials aimed at adapting farming systems in order to protect the water resources, we propose a new approach to the diagnosis of the evolving place of pastures in these lands, which accounts for the spatial and functional dimensions of the farming activity and involves different organizational levels. This methodological process is based on the idea of rotation, used as an indicator of the organization of the farming space, and reveals the dynamics of the grasslands; it is illustrated by examples of water protection in open fields in Lorraine on drinkable water catchment basins. This approach should be reproducible in other situations and made available to all those in charge of these open field lands. On the other hand, 'observatories' on practices, especially those of the options taken for the management of grasslands, are decisive for the information of public deciders regarding the interest of pastures.
