Activist knowledge and relationships with intellectuals in a railroad union
Savoirs militants et rapports aux intellectuels dans un syndicat cheminot

The paper focuses on the way in which groups of workers consider activist know-how and intellectuals. This relationship is analyzed through the effects generated by the insertion within an activist collective (a local CGT chapter) and the observation of local interactions in a rural working-class region. The survey was conducted mostly among workshop-based railroad workers, and it underscores the enlarged social experience of workers active in the union, in terms of both activities and acquaintances. Responsibilities within a trade union require from workers that they perform intellectual operations that are not necessarily obvious for those confined to execution tasks, and they can experience difficulties in meeting the double repertoire of skills – written and communicational – expected from activists. The shift in focus from the union (where a working class socialization prevails) to the wider space of local activism (in which union members interact with more educated social groups) sheds light on the often conflictual relationships that the railroad workers have with those they call “intellectuals”.
Le rapport de certains ouvriers aux savoirs militants et aux intellectuels est appréhendé à travers l’analyse des effets produits par l’insertion dans un collectif militant (un syndicat CGT) et l’observation d’interactions dans une configuration locale (une région rurale et ouvrière). Menée auprès de cheminots travaillant pour la plupart dans un atelier, l’enquête permet de restituer l’élargissement des horizons sociaux d’ouvriers syndicalistes, tant en termes d’activités que de fréquentations. La prise de responsabilité dans le syndicat implique l’accomplissement d’opérations intellectuelles n’allant pas de soi pour des agents d’exécution, et ceux-ci peuvent éprouver des difficultés à répondre au double registre de compétences – rédactionnelles et relationnelles – attendues du militant. Un déplacement de la focale du syndicat (où règne un entre-soi ouvrier) à l’espace militant local (où les syndicalistes fréquentent des catégories plus diplômées) permet d’éclairer les rapports, souvent conflictuels, que les cheminots entretiennent avec ceux qu’ils nomment les « intellectuels ».
