Le paradoxe d'un pays rural qui s'ignore : urbanisation et place de l'agriculture familiale au Brésil

This article shows that the definition of the rural space and the urban space in Brazil depends on political and fiscal criteria distant from the reality, what contributes to underestimate the real scale of the rurality and its essential component the family farming. The statistics which ensue from it support certain visions of the supposed development pass by the drift from the land of the poor farmers and the urban and industrial growth of the country.
Cet article montre que la définition de l’espace rural et de l’espace urbain au Brésil repose sur des critères politico-fiscaux éloignés de la réalité, ce qui contribue à minorer l’ampleur réelle de la ruralité et de sa composante essentielle, l’agriculture familiale. Les statistiques qui en découlent appuient certaines visions du développement censé passer par l’exode rural des paysans pauvres et la croissance urbaine et industrielle du pays.
