The practice of transhumance in Extreme Northern Cameroon since 1970s
La pratique de la transhumance dans l'Extrême-Nord Cameroun depuis les années 1970
Résumé
During the years 1997 and 1998, a field study on transhumance had been conducted in far northern Cameroon. It mainly aimed at collecting and analysing data on transactions that allow pastoralists to settle in rangelands with their family and cattle. Objective of our current study is to see whether and how transhumance is still a way of managing cattle. Transhumance is “the seasonal transfer of grazing animals to different pastures, often over substantial distances”. This transhumance study pays specific attention to nomadic breeders’ migration history. Migration means a definitive move of men and cattle. Social discontent in herders groups or climatic problems may be solved through migration.
Une étude socio-économique a été menée sur la transhumance dans la région de l’Extrême-Nord Cameroun en 1997 et 1998 : elle examine l’évolution de cette pratique chez les éleveurs traditionnellement transhumants. Elle présente, parmi les 32 campements d’éleveurs itinérants (ou nomades) qui ont été visités, trois cas différenciés de migration pastorale vers la région d’étude. Pour ceux qui ont migré dans l’urgence, la perte des troupeaux a entraîné soit la sédentarisation et le passage à l’agriculture, soit la location de leur force de travail auprès des propriétaires de bétail, notamment parmi les commerçants en bétail et la notabilité locale.
