Sex determination in vertebrates
Résumé
This article provides a short overview of the different sex determination systems of vertebrates and the known genes that initiate sexual development as master regulator in species with genetic sex determination. Besides description of the outstanding variety where the different sex determination systems do not follow any phylogenetic pattern and where new sex determiners have evolved independently and repeatedly an evolutionary perspective on the diversity of sex determination in vertebrates is given.
