How to design cover crop management plans in vineyards that satisfy both production and environment objectives

Résumé

Designing cover crop management plans that would satisfy objectives related to both grapevine production and environment is a real challenge for vine growers. A method of multiple criteria analysis was used for rating various strategies in different soil conditions. A range of alternative management plans was defined by exploring all combinations of three variables: type of grass, percentage of covered soil surface, time when the grass activity stops. These alternative plans were explored for deep and shallow soils. The evaluation criteria were vegetative development, yield, product quality and run-off. A water balance model was run to simulate the behaviour of the grapevine – cover crop – soil system under the range of explored management plans and soil conditions, evaluate criteria and calculate the overall performance with various weights assigned to production and environment criteria. At last, a frequency analysis was carried out over 30 years weather data to estimate the robustness of the most satisfying management plans. On shallow soils, when priority was given to limiting runoff, the best management plans were those maintaining a cover crop over the largest area during the winter period whereas when priority was given to production and quality, keeping bare soil was preferred. In contrast, on deep soils, the best management plans were those maintaining a cover crop over the largest area and during the longest period, whatever the objective. Yet, the robustness of the best management plans in relation to the inter-annual weather variability was poor in some cases. Such results confirm and generalize conclusions drawn from various experiments exploring each a limited range of cover cropping policies
