Innovative processes in anaerobic digestion: overview of the production of biohydrogen and biomolecules by mixed culture fermentation

Résumé

Due to the use complex of microbial consortia in non-sterile conditions, anaerobic digestion processes are environmentally friendly and accept a wide range of substrates from any kind of organic residues to dedicated biomasses. However, the main products of full-scale anaerobic digestion plants, methane and digestate, have a low added value in comparison to mixed-culture fermentation products such as biohydrogen, organic acids, alcohols or polyhydroxylalkanoates. The objective of this presentation is to provide an overview of the most innovative mixed microbial culture fermentation processes. To achieve this objective, both qualitative (e.g. substrates, pretreatments) and quantitative data (e.g. yields, productivities, process parameters) were retrieved from 624 manually-checked research articles, excluding review papers, and 134 patents published after 1997. In addition, a straightforward market study was carried out for nine promising biomolecules: hydrogen, ethanol, acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, 1,3-propanediol, butyric acid, caproic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoates. The most studied process is dark fermentation (DF), far ahead of photofermentation (PF) and microbial electrolysis cells (MEC). Biohydrogen is by far the most studied molecule. Dark fermentation processes lead to an average yield of 0.1 gCOD.gCOD-1 whatever the temperature, working volume and mode of operation. This shows the necessity of recovering other products and combining DF with other processes: PF, MEC or anaerobic digestion. Indeed, DF can be easily implemented in “second generation” biogas plants. Different biomolecules can be produced according the substrate. For examples, lactic acid is mainly recovered from foodwaste, acetic and butyric acids are also recovered from food waste but also bagasse…, 1,3 propanediol from glycerol, polyhydroxyalkanoates from wastewaters. Two parameters are very important regarding further valorisation of biomolecules: their concentration and selectivity. The main limit remains the extraction of soluble metabolites, at low price and high efficiency, coupled to processes.
