How forest edges contribute to landscape connectivity?

Résumé

Most of the temperate landscapes mix woodland and farmland habitats that are often in contact by forest-agriculture edges. These components of the landscape are well-known for their multiple effects on biodiversity and many ecosystem services. However, less is known about their contribution to overall landscape connectivity. As linear features efficiently linking different parts of the landscapes, forest-agriculture edges play a key role in both structural and functional connectivity. Here, we analyse (i) how forest-agriculture edges may contribute to global landscape connectivity, (ii) what are their main properties, (iii) how they interact with other linear components such as hedgerows, and (iv) how they may influence some ecosystem services related to connectivity at the landscape level. Based on a literature review, we point out a lack of consensus about the contribution of forest edges to connectivity. Most of the studies deal with the transverse connections between adjacent habitats provided by edges, but few studies to date focus on how edges contribute to longitudinal connectivity at the landscape scale. We argue that forest edges can be seen as “hedgerows with single face”, which plead for strong similarities and complementaries between forest-agriculture edges and hedgerow networks. We conclude by some suggestions to include these properties of forest-agriculture edges into a larger methodological framework for the evaluation of landscape connectivity and the related ecosystem services.
